This active volcano rises to 5,016 meters above sea level. Located in the Andes mountain range at the gateway to El Dorado, it offers a spectacular viewpoint over the inter-Andean valley and the Amazon. Its sunrises are truly unique.
Reaching the summit requires excellent physical condition, as the ascent is steep with sandy sections and rocky steps. Due to its proximity to the Amazon, rapid weather changes are common.
The trail leading to the refuge is remarkable, passing through a cloud forest filled with orchids, mosses, bromeliads, and ancient trees. This habitat is home to a variety of birds, and occasionally mammals may also be spotted.

Here we prepare our dinner and enjoy the scenery.
We set out very early in the morning to reach the summit at sunrise and admire the beauty of this mountain. We have a 1,200-meter elevation gain, which takes about 5 to 6 hours to climb and 2 to 3 hours to descend back to the refuge. After a rest, we continue to the Sangay National Park checkpoint, where our transportation awaits to take us to Baños.
